Before the Holidays: Give Your Financial Plan a Checkup

Oct 15
3 min read

Somehow, we're already approaching the end of another year.

Once November arrives, Thanksgiving, holiday shopping, travel, family gatherings, Christmas, and New Year's seem to happen all at once.

Before life gets even busier, October is a great time to give your financial protection plan a quick checkup.

You don't need to completely overhaul your finances.

Start by asking one question:

Does the financial plan I have today still match the life I'm living today?

A Lot Can Change in One Year

Think back to where you were at the beginning of 2026.

Has anything changed?

Maybe you bought a home.

Maybe you got married or welcomed a new child.

Maybe your income increased.

Maybe you started a business, expanded an existing one, or took on new debt.

Maybe your children became financially independent.

Or maybe retirement suddenly feels a lot closer than it did a few years ago.

As your life changes, your financial needs can change too.

1. Review Your Life Insurance

Start with your current coverage.

How much life insurance do you have?

What type of policy is it?

Who are your beneficiaries?

Does it include living benefits?

If you have coverage through your employer, do you understand how much you have and what happens to that coverage if you leave your job?

Most importantly:

Would the coverage you have today accomplish what you want it to accomplish?

If you bought a policy ten years ago and haven't looked at it since, don't automatically assume it still fits your current situation.

2. Check Your Beneficiaries

This is a simple one that can easily be overlooked.

Review the beneficiary designations on your life insurance policies and other financial accounts and make sure they still reflect your wishes.

Marriage, divorce, births, deaths, and other major life changes can all be reasons to review beneficiary information.

3. Business Owners: Think Beyond Yourself

If you're a business owner, your financial checkup should include your business.

What would happen if you suddenly weren't there?

Could the business continue operating?

What would happen to your employees?

What happens to your ownership interest?

Would your family inherit a business they don't know how—or don't want—to operate?

Life insurance can potentially play a role in strategies involving key-person protection, buy-sell planning, and business succession.

The right strategy depends on the individual business, but these are conversations worth having before there's a crisis.

4. Start Thinking About Retirement Income

For those getting closer to retirement, another important question is:

How will I turn the money I've accumulated into income?

For most of our working lives, we're focused on accumulation.

Save. Invest. Contribute. Grow.

But eventually, the equation changes.

You need to determine how your assets may help support your lifestyle when the regular paycheck stops.

Depending on your financial situation and goals, different strategies—including certain annuity strategies—may be worth exploring as part of that conversation.

Annuities aren't appropriate for everyone, and features vary considerably between products. Understanding your goals, timeline, existing assets, liquidity needs, and desired income is an important part of evaluating your options.

Don't Wait Until January

There's nothing wrong with setting financial goals as a New Year's resolution.

But why wait?

Use October to identify anything that needs attention so you can head into the holiday season—and eventually 2027—with a clearer picture of where you stand.

Pull out your policies.

Review your accounts.

Check your beneficiaries.

Think about your retirement.

And ask yourself:

"If life changed unexpectedly tomorrow, would the financial plan I have today be ready?"

If you're unsure, let's sit down and review it together.

My mission at Arisumi Financial is to help families build, protect, and preserve their wealth.

Sometimes that starts with something as simple as making sure the plan you already have still fits.
