Life Insurance Awareness Month: Protecting More Than Just Your Future
September is Life Insurance Awareness Month (LIAM), and it's a good reminder to think about one of the most important pieces of a financial protection plan.
Most people understand the basic purpose of life insurance: if you pass away, it can provide financial support for the people you leave behind.
But the conversation shouldn't stop there.
Life insurance is really about protecting everything you've worked hard to build—your income, your home, your family, your business, and ultimately, your legacy.
What Would Happen Financially If You Weren't Here?
It's not always a comfortable question, but it's an important one.
Think about all of the financial responsibilities you handle today. Your mortgage or rent, utilities, groceries, car payments, childcare, education expenses, debts, and everyday living expenses don't necessarily disappear when you do.
If your family depends on your income, life insurance can help provide financial resources during an incredibly difficult time.
It may help your loved ones:
Replace lost income
Pay a mortgage or other debts
Cover everyday living expenses
Provide for children's future education
Handle final expenses
Protect a family business
Create an inheritance or legacy
And life insurance isn't only for the primary breadwinner. A stay-at-home parent, for example, may provide childcare and household support that could be expensive to replace.
"I Have Life Insurance Through Work."
Employer-provided life insurance can be a valuable benefit, but it's worth understanding exactly what you have.
How much coverage is provided? Is it enough for your family's needs? What happens if you leave your employer?
Your workplace policy may be part of your overall protection strategy, but you shouldn't automatically assume it's all the coverage you'll ever need.
Your Life Changes. Your Coverage Should Too.
Maybe you purchased a policy years ago when you were single and renting an apartment.
Now you're married, have two children, own a home, make more money, and have completely different financial responsibilities.
Does your old coverage still fit your life today?
Major life events are good opportunities to review your protection, including getting married, having children, buying a home, starting a business, changing careers, increasing your income, or preparing for retirement.
Even if nothing dramatic has changed recently, periodically reviewing your coverage can help make sure your protection still aligns with your goals.
Life Insurance Isn't One-Size-Fits-All
One person may simply want affordable coverage to protect their family during their working years. Another may be concerned about leaving a legacy. A business owner may have entirely different needs.
That's why I believe the conversation should begin with understanding what you're trying to protect and accomplish before talking about a particular product.
As an independent life insurance broker, I work with multiple carriers, allowing me to help clients explore solutions based on their individual goals and budget rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.
Take the LIAM Challenge
This September, I challenge you to do one thing:
Take 15 minutes and review your life insurance.
If you already have coverage, find out how much you have, what type of policy it is, who your beneficiaries are, and whether it still meets your family's needs.
If you don't have life insurance, September is a great opportunity to learn about your options.
You don't have to become an insurance expert.
You just need to make sure the people and things you've worked so hard for have a plan protecting them.
