Life Insurance Isn't Just About Dying: Let's Talk About Living Benefits

When most people hear the words life insurance, they immediately think about a death benefit.

And yes, providing financial protection for your loved ones after you're gone is one of the primary reasons life insurance exists.

But here's a question more people should be asking:

What if something happens to me and I'm still alive?

That's where understanding living benefits can become an important part of the life insurance conversation.

What Are Living Benefits?

Depending on the policy and its specific provisions, certain life insurance policies may provide access to a portion of the death benefit while the insured person is still living after a qualifying event.

These are commonly referred to as living benefits or accelerated death benefits.

Qualifying circumstances vary by policy and carrier but may include events such as a terminal, chronic, or critical illness.

Why does that matter?

Because surviving a serious health event can create financial challenges of its own.

Even with health insurance, a family could potentially face lost income, deductibles, household expenses, childcare costs, travel expenses, or other financial obligations while someone is unable to work.

Having additional financial resources available could help provide more options during an already difficult situation.

Protection Is About More Than Medical Bills

Imagine someone experiences a serious qualifying illness and can't work for an extended period.

The mortgage still needs to be paid.

Groceries still need to be purchased.

The electric bill still arrives.

The car payment doesn't disappear.

That's why I like to look at life insurance as part of a broader financial protection strategy.

You're not simply protecting against death.

You're considering the financial consequences of life's "what ifs."

What About Cash Value?

Certain types of permanent life insurance may also accumulate cash value over time.

Depending on how a policy is structured, that cash value may potentially be accessed during the policyholder's lifetime.

That doesn't mean permanent life insurance is automatically right for everyone. Accessing cash value can also affect the policy's benefits and performance.

It does mean that it's worth understanding the different types of life insurance available instead of assuming every policy works exactly the same way.

Do You Know What Your Current Policy Actually Does?

Here's something I'd encourage everyone to do during Life Insurance Awareness Month:

Pull out your current policy.

Don't just look at the death benefit.

Ask:

What benefits does my policy actually provide?

You may have purchased coverage years ago and haven't looked at it since.

Find out what type of policy you own, how much coverage you have, whether it includes living-benefit provisions, who your beneficiaries are, and whether the coverage still fits your financial situation today.

If you don't understand something in your policy, ask.

You should understand what you're paying for.

Build It. Protect It. Preserve It.

We spend so much of our lives focused on building.

Building careers.

Building businesses.

Buying homes.

Growing investments.

Raising families.

Saving for retirement.

Creating something we can eventually pass on to the next generation.

But building wealth is only part of the equation.

We also need to think about protecting what we've built and preserving it for the people who matter most.

That's where life insurance can play an important role.

This Life Insurance Awareness Month, don't just ask yourself whether you have life insurance.

Ask yourself a better question:

"Do I have the right protection for the life I'm living today?"

If you don't know the answer, let's find out.
