# Hurricane Season Isn't Just About Your Pantry — It's About Your Plan

Every summer in Hawai'i, we go through the same routine: check the flashlights, stock up on water, make sure the generator still runs. It's second nature by now. But there's one part of hurricane prep that often gets skipped — making sure your finances could actually weather a storm too.

Here are a few things worth checking before the season picks up.

1. Could Your Emergency Fund Handle a Real Disruption?

Most financial guidance says to keep 3-6 months of essential expenses in an accessible account. But hurricane season adds a specific wrinkle: if a storm knocks out power, closes your workplace, or damages your home, you may need cash on hand faster than a typical emergency requires.

Ask yourself:

  • If you couldn't work for two weeks, would you be okay?

  • If you needed a few thousand dollars for repairs or temporary housing right now, where would it come from?

If the answer feels shaky, that's worth addressing before, not during, a storm.

2. Do You Know What Your Insurance Actually Covers?

This is the one people find out too late. Homeowners insurance, renters insurance, and life insurance all have different roles — and different limitations — when disaster hits. It's worth knowing, in plain terms, what's covered and what isn't, rather than assuming.

If you have living benefits built into your life insurance policy, this is also a good time to remind yourself what they cover. Many policies include benefits for events you wouldn't expect — but only if you know they're there and how to use them.

3. Is Your Paperwork Somewhere You Can Actually Get To It?

If you had to evacuate tonight, could you grab your important documents in under five minutes? Insurance policies, account information, ID, and a list of key contacts should be somewhere easy to grab — physically or digitally — not scattered across drawers and old emails.

Preparedness Is a Financial Habit, Not Just a Storm Habit

The families who handle disruptions best aren't necessarily the ones with the most money — they're the ones who took an hour, at some point, to actually look at their plan before they needed it. Hurricane season is a good excuse to do that now, even if the storm itself doesn't end up threatening your area this year.
